Building a business isn’t easy, but building one across five different regions? That’s another level. John and Kim Kelliher, founders of Grapeline Wine Tours, have been at it for over 20 years, and their story is just as rich as the wines they highlight on their tours. I sat down with them on Up+Adam to dig into what makes their approach so successful, from embracing the nuances of each wine region to staying ahead of the curve in a constantly changing industry.

“When we started in Temecula, there were maybe 14 wineries,” John shared. “Now, there are over 50. Paso Robles...now it’s over 400. It’s amazing to see how the interest has grown.” Yet, as Kim explained, they’ve stayed grounded by treating each new region like a new business. “We spend a lot of time in each place, acting like customers and getting to know the community. It’s not just about wine—it’s about the people, the food, and the authenticity of the experience.”

What makes Grapeline’s relationship with the Central Coast and Paso Robles so special is the care they’ve taken to integrate into the area over the past 20 years. As Kim pointed out, Paso Robles has a vibe all its own—rural, authentic, and deeply tied to the land. “Paso is unique,” she said. “Authenticity is everything here. People want to meet winemakers, experience the food, and connect with the soul of the region. That’s why it was so important for us to approach Paso with respect and really get to know it before opening here.” That commitment to authenticity has made Grapeline a trusted name in the area, offering experiences that blend seamlessly into the local wine culture.

What really stood out was their dedication to creating those “magic moments” for guests. Whether it’s introducing them to a winemaker—who, as John puts it, “feels like a rock star to guests”—or offering unique experiences like their panoramic shuttle, they go beyond the basics. “We’re in the happy business,” Kim said with a laugh. “If you can’t have a good day with us, you’re just not happy.”

Their insights into trends were equally fascinating. From the shift away from large groups to focusing on intimate, boutique experiences, they’ve adapted while staying true to their roots. And yes, their avoidance of “party buses with poles” isn’t just a choice—it’s a statement about the kind of experience they want to provide.

If you’ve ever wondered what goes into creating a wine tour that’s equal parts relaxed and unforgettable, this episode will give you the full story. Whether you’re a wine newbie or a seasoned aficionado, Grapeline’s story is one you won’t want to miss. Hit them up, and take a tour!
